THE SIEGE (R&D)
The Seven Sisters, social housing towers that have stood in Rochdale since the 1960s, now scheduled for ‘regeneration’ by the local housing association.
-
Strapped for cash and facing mounting debts, Rochdale Borough Council sells its entire social housing stock to a private housing association.
The new landlord promises to manage the homes as a ‘mutual society’, where tenants and employees will be in control. But very soon its board of directors is pushing through plans to ‘regenerate’ the town centre by demolishing two of its housing estates.
Residents launch a campaign and enlist the support of the council and the Mayor of Greater Manchester. But nothing, not even a national scandal, seems capable of stopping their landlord from pressing ahead with its plans.
A play about the privatisation of social housing, the human cost it inflicts, and the long, hard struggle to oppose it.
Currently in development. We are actively looking for partners and funding to support the creation process.
